I like year-end lists. I think comparing a movie like Happiest Season to His House is silly and reductive, and I think that ranking something so subjective as taste, even without other factors, is futile and pompous. That said, I always find new shows/movies/books/music to dig into, and I’m reminded of things I liked or wanted to check out but lost track of.
As I look to a new year, I hope for a lot to begin and a lot to end. I’m so grateful for the creators and writers and producers and all those other people who have shared their art and made a scary, claustrophobic year bearable. This year, my listening habits were all over the place, depending on feelings and boredom. I revisited albums I love and listened to them on a loop, at one point waking up with a Nick Drake song already in my head. I surfed around Bandcamp and Spotify, looking for new artists and genres I hadn’t even heard of. I listened to only dance music, to only folk music, to only shoegaze, for days at a time. I sometimes dissected lyrics, and I sometimes stretched myself into a giant X in the middle of the floor and listened to an album with my eyes closed. I think it all helped.
